In support of UWGLA’s mission to raise the high school graduation rate in L.A. County by boosting teacher effectiveness, parent engagement and middle school achievement, employees of SunAmerica Financial Group are providing local students with the tools they need to succeed.
Last week, the latest in a series of United Way “Backpack-to-School” events took place at Northridge Middle School – one of its seven Leadership Matters pilot campuses.
In the coming months, close to 300 children will receive backpacks chock full of school supplies donated by SunAmerica – with the first batch being hand-delivered on Wednesday evening by volunteers like Senior Director of Marketing Brian Welsh who admitted:
“The fact that there are homeless and low-income families sending their kids to school every day without supplies because they can’t afford them really affected me. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to know we were able to distribute backpacks to the students and parents who need them most, and to see their sincere appreciation.”
Fellow volunteer and Corporate Communications Manager Linda Malamut emphasized the importance of SunAmerica’s continuing partnership with UWGLA.
“Our company has a long history of giving back to the communities where its employees live and work and has been involved with United Way of Greater L.A. for over two decades,” she said. “It’s a wonderful organization – one whose mission we support fully – and we’re confident that many deserving students will benefit from our participation in this effort.”
