Make sure your community counts!
Do you know if your community is conducting a full Homeless Count this January?
Every two years, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) conducts the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count. Data from the count is critical to addressing the complexities of homelessness and planning how to best invest public resources, raise public awareness, identify the needs of homeless individuals and improve service delivery opportunities to prevent and eliminate homelessness in our region. The Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count is the largest in the nation and, in order to get the most accurate data on homelessness, we need every community to be counted!
In 2011 we had 31 cities out of 88 conducting a full count. This year we are trying to get 70 cities to opt-in to make this the best Homeless Count to date!
Why Should I Be A Count Community?
- Understand The Situation: In order to make a difference in the lives of homeless men, women, children, and veterans we need to know who they are and where they are. For most of the year, many of our homeless neighbors slip by without notice. On this night, let’s help our homeless neighbors remember that we have not forgotten them.
- Bring Resources To Your Community: The data gathered from the count is the most powerful tool your city and the nonprofits in your community have to make the case for additional + specialized resources. If your community decides not to opt-in to conduct a full count, its data will be lumped in with the larger region, which will not allow your community to specify its need and progress to date.
- Drive Engagement: Connect with community leaders and citizens in your community that care, and create a venue to drive further engagement.
Please note, you do not need official city approval to opt-in your community. YOU, as a community leader, can take this important step on your own.
Also, this year will be the first time that LAHSA offers communities an opportunity to take the Homeless Count one step further by opting into becoming a Count Plus Community! In addition to the standard count, Count Plus Communities will get to know their homeless neighbors by conducting a person by person survey.
This year’s deadline to opt-in is October 15th. Make sure that in 2013 your community counts! Sign up for the 2013 Homeless count today.
