UPS’ Tom Campagna (right) recently participated in UWGLA’s Loaned Executive Program, doing his part to advance the organization’s core mission of Creating Pathways Out of Poverty for all Angelenos. Below, he discusses what this unique experience means to him and the community as a whole.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and why you decided to participate in United Way’s Loaned Executive program.

I am an owner/partner at UPS, where I’ve worked since 1985. I’ve enjoyed my career at the company very much and was honored to be asked by our district office to join the LE program.

In your opinion, what does our mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty mean for the residents of this community?

I believe that UWGLA’s mission represents hope. By providing necessary support to people living in poverty, we’re offering them hope for the future and making an impact on this city for generations to come.

Describe a typical workday at United Way.

I would support staff members any way I could – whether it meant going out on the campaign trail, assisting with office work, visiting partner agencies or talking to and helping those in need.

What was your most memorable or rewarding experience as a Loaned Executive?

Without a doubt, it was working with the UWGLA staff; this is truly an amazing group of people! I also enjoyed my visit to the Boys and Girls Club in Wilmington, where they genuinely care about each and every child who walks through their doors. They are making a real difference in our community with the time and dollars they receive as a United Way partner.

What would you say to someone who’s interested in becoming a Loaned Executive?

DO IT! It’s the opportunity of a lifetime and will forever leave an impression on your soul.

United Way is working hard to improve the overall quality of life in L.A. County with the help of its community heroes. If you were a real superhero, what would your superpower be?

I’d have the ability to reach people who are reluctant to give their time and resources so that I could better explain how their generosity can change lives and impact the communities in which they live and work.
