Last night, about 200 parents, students and community members from the eastside of L.A. gathered to hear School Board President Monica Garcia, Abelardo Diaz, AnnaMarie Montanez and Isabel Vazquez discuss the issues facing the L.A. Unified School District. It was the last in a series of forums, sponsored by United Way of Greater Los Angeles along with numerous community groups, enabling the school board candidates to share their views on how to improve our schools.
It was a lively discussion, moderated by Marqueece Harris-Dawson, President and CEO of Community Coalition. Topics included the performance of Superintendent John Deasy, the role of the teachers’ union in boosting student performance and parent engagement.
