The three political newcomers competing for an open seat on the LAUSD school board gathered recently to discuss the issues facing L.A.’s schools. More than 100 parents, students and community members attended the forum at the Boys & Girls Club of San Fernando Valley in Pacoima. United Way of Greater Los Angeles sponsored the event, along with numerous community organizations.

The candidates are Maria Cano, a longtime activist in the East San Fernando Valley; Monica Ratliff, a teacher at a high-performing public school; and Antonio Sanchez, who has worked for the L.A. County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO and Mayor Villaraigosa.

For a closer look at their opinions on the issues  – including whether they support Superintendent John Deasy and whether they would have backed the bill that would have made it easier to fire teachers accused of harming children – check out LA School Report.
