Unbanked in Los AngelesAn estimated 1 million people in L.A. don’t have a bank account. A recent study showed that unbanked families have fewer opportunities to build credit, are prey to predatory lenders and are half as likely to save money as families with bank accounts.

L.A. Collaborative Wins $6M Towards Education ReformAugust 6, 2010- United Way, LAUSD, LA Chamber, City of LA and other partners of the L.A. Compact announced today that a 3-year $6M grant by the U.S. Department of Education has been awarded to turn around and sustain student achievement in Los Angeles’ lowest performing schools. Launch of 100,000 Home Campaign

 

United Way joined partners including the National Alliance to End Homelessness and Bank of America in Washington D.C. for the launch of the 100,000 Homes Campaign. This grassroots movement, led by nonprofit Common Ground, is bringing together communities to find housing for their most vulnerable homeless people. Long Beach, Venice and Hollywood are among those who have already signed on to the campaign. The ultimate goal is to provide 100,000 homes for 100,000 homeless people by July 2013.
