A Dr. Seuss-Inspired Announcement about United Way of Greater Los Angeles’ Read Across America Day

Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places!

Read Across America Day!

You have brains in your head.

A foot in your shoe.

You have Valero sponsoring

the entire hullabaloo.

You’re not on your own. And you know what we know?

Many volunteers will come together and go out and go.

They’ll read to students at schools. Read to ‘em with care.

About them you will say, “I wish I was there there.”

Filling kids’ heads full of brains is an easy feat,

your smarts are passed down with reading, so neat.

And many will find

they will want to go down.

In that case, of course,

volunteer in your town.

It’s open to all

in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen

and frequently do

to people as brainy

and footsy as you.

And when things start to happen?

Don’t worry. Don’t stew.

It’s a one-day event

happening on March two.

United Way of Greater Los Angeles and Valero are proud to support Read Across America Day, held annually on Dr. Seuss’ birthday — March 2. Valero, a long-time supporter of United Way, will sponsor the organization’s Read Across America Day program, making it possible for volunteers to read at schools in Wilmington, Calif. Volunteers from Valero and United Way will read to every pre-K, kindergartner and first grader, and will participate in reading-related activities. Hosted by the National Education Association (NEA), Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that takes place nationwide. Valero is a founding member of United Way’s “Success by 6,” a 40-member community-based education collaborative focused on early childhood and parenting education programs.
