Affinity Groups Manager


Under the direction of the Director, Engagement & Strategic Initiatives, the Affinity Groups Manager is responsible for implementing and coordinating a comprehensive donor cultivation and stewardship strategy to advance the growth of the United Way of Greater Los Angeles (UWGLA) Affinity Groups. This role will focus on donor engagement, fundraising, and event planning. Key goals for this position include working with Development to create strategies that will activate donors and involve them in our mission work, increase the number of new donors and retain and deepen the relationships with current donors and constituents.

This highly organized, self-directed, strategic thinker will set priorities and solve problems while developing cooperative, productive relationships with each Affinity Group. By providing strategic oversight and guidance to lead those within each group’s membership portfolio, she/he can ensure the groups’ activities are reflective of the mission of UWGLA.



  • Increase membership in existing Affinity Groups through long-term strategic planning, marketing, cultivation, recruitment, revenue, and engagement strategies.

  • Create tactics for long-term donor engagement by segments and channels, in collaboration with the Marketing & Communications, Development, and Community Impact Departments.

  • Professionally plan and execute all Affinity Group advocacy, volunteer, and event engagements with primary goal to create advocates for United Way who are motivated and equipped to take action on our behalf.

  • Create and implement a full calendar of Affinity Group engagement events, ranging from advocacy workshops, volunteer activities, professional trainings and cabinet meetings.

  • Design new initiatives that will welcome new prospects and demonstrate appreciation to current donors and friends.

  • Manage and implement additional Affinity Group outreach and engagement opportunities that help realize UWGLA’s overall philanthropic goals, both in support of community initiatives and annual fundraising.

  • Run and manage Affinity Groups’ Cabinet Meetings and Retreats on a regular basis, in partnership with the appropriate Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.

  • Work with the CRM database and systems team to help streamline and improve processes around list management, data input and integrity, gift acknowledgements, campaigns, fund management, and donor reporting.

  • Establish and oversee information tracking processes regarding acknowledgement, recognition, on-going communications and continued cultivation of past and current donors to enhance their relationship with UWGLA and increase the likelihood of continued contributions.

  • Work collaboratively with Marketing & Communications and Development Departments to develop worthwhile donor recognition, including execution of plans, procedures, and processes.

  • Create and manage the budget for Affinity Groups and continually assess efforts to maximize returns.

  • Plan and execute events for Affinity Groups in conjunction with the Development and Marketing & Communications Departments; responsible for collaborating with and managing relationships with external vendors, and internal stakeholders to define event objectives, requirements, scope, timing, and budgets to ensure event activation runs smoothly.

  • Continuously track, evaluate and seek to improve volunteer engagement, impact work, resources, and capacity as it relates to Affinity Groups.

  • Serve as a liaison for each Affinity Group to UWGLA departments including, but not limited to, Marketing & Communications, Development, and Community Impact. Specifically, work with the Development team helping activate, recognize and engage Affinity Group donors within workplace giving campaigns.

  • Analyze existing donor segments and determine if we should open new Affinity Groups that would grow engagement/revenue

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.



  • Minimum 5 years related experience working in development, fundraising, communications, and event management with strong project management skills. Previous experience interacting with philanthropic donors is required, nonprofit experience a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

  • Should possess strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to accurately manage and analyze data.

  • Must have excellent relationship building skills, strong organization, and follow up skills.

  • Must be able to exercise initiative, independent good judgment, flexibility, discretion, and solid decision- making.

  • Must be able to successfully manage multiple priorities and demonstrate confidence working with corporate and community leaders.

  • Proficient in of Microsoft Office (Excel, Work, Outlook, and PowerPoint is essential; experience using Microsoft CRM or comparable fundraising database software preferred.

  • Proven ability to prepare clear and accurate reports, correspondence, and other written and oral communications.

  • Exceptional writing skills with an eye for creativity and great attention to detail.

  • Actively seek out best practices and continually bring new and impactful ideas with a collaborative approach.

  • Must have flexibility with scheduling, including availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and early mornings
