With 300 members of the public, private, nonprofit, business, government, faith and philanthropic sectors in attendance, the Business Leaders Task Force on Homelessness celebrated the start of the Home for Good initiative's second year at the J.W. Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live.
Named for the five-year action plan to end chronic and veteran homelessness in L.A. County, the 2012 Home for Good Summit drew notables such as Barbara Poppe, Executive Director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, social media activist Mark Horvath and Steve Hilton of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.
A panel discussion with representatives from Vet to Vet California, the Hilton Foundation, L.A. Family Housing, the City of Santa Monica and the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance highlighted the benefits of transitioning to a "housing first" model which readily provides homeless individuals with access to permanent supportive housing.
The half-day event also featured facilitated tabletop discussions, a formal awards ceremony to recognize Home for Good's most avid proponents, a preview of what's to come as well as a recap of its highly successful first year.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of United Way of Greater L.A., the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and countless community partners, 864 military veterans and 2,273 chronically homeless individuals have been housed since the joint initiative was originally launched in the fall of 2010.
“Together, we have made an amazing amount of progress in the past year but a great deal of work still lies ahead,” said Task Force Co-Chair Renee Fraser. “There are partnerships to be established, homes to be built and countless lives waiting to be transformed.”
