Community Impact Department
The Director, Anti-Poverty Initiatives will lead United Way of Greater Los Angeles’ (UWGLA) strategy to promote the economic stability of people in poverty throughout Los Angeles County. The Financial Stability pillar encompasses United Way’s work around workforce & employment, asset building, and crisis services, including oversight of the federal Emergency Food & Shelter Program (EFSP), the local Utilities Program, and other critical community supports. The Director, Anti-Poverty Initiatives will oversee assigned staff, as well as guide UWGLA’s work in grantmaking, community engagement, and policy work related to addressing poverty in the region. The Director, Anti-Poverty Initiatives will be the liaison to the EFSP Local Board, which provides oversight, guidance, and direction to the program and its operation.
- Develop and execute the strategy for United Way’s Financial Stability grantmaking, engagement, and policy strategies to provide support to families in poverty.
- Lead ongoing community engagement process, including nonprofit partners, corporate leaders, public sector partners, and faith communities, to solicit input on key strategies in this area.
- Develop an integrated strategy, to coalesce United Way’s work across Employment, Asset building, and Crisis support, that maximizes effectiveness and can be clearly messaged to staff and donors.
- Assess and respond to the changing landscape of poverty in Los Angeles County by tracking key research and statistics, as well as ongoing communication with community partners to understand trends on the ground.
- Manage a team of 3-5 full-time staff members to implement the Financial Stability strategy.
- Ensure successful grantmaking and efficient oversight of United Way and EFSP grants; totaling over $8M in grant funds.
- Lead and manage the EFSP Board of Directors, convening regular meetings that engage the Board in program oversight and active administration.
- Communicate the need for, and the impact of, United Way’s work in Financial Stability by collaborating with Marketing and Communications in preparation of collateral materials, presentations, and website updates.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Minimum 7 - 10 years related experience with a proven track record of creating community impact in anti-poverty work.
- Should possess strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to accurately manage and analyze data.
- Must have excellent relationship building skills, strong organization, and follow up skills.
- Must be able to exercise initiative, independent good judgment, flexibility, discretion, and solid decision making.
- Must be able to successfully manage multiple priorities and demonstrate confidence working with diverse stakeholders, including nonprofit, public sector, corporate, and philanthropic stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all organizational levels within a diverse environment.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is essential.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. Master’s or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
