Elise Buik, President & CEO

In March 2005, Elise Buik made history by becoming the first female President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Greater Los Angeles. An Atlanta native, Elise initially found Los Angeles compelling for its weather. But she stayed for the community and the immediate impact she could make at United Way. After seven years as Marketing Manager for a medical software company, Elise joined United Way in 1994 with a strong belief in the organization and a deep dedication to improving the quality of life in Los Angeles County. Starting in the marketing department, Elise worked her way up through the ranks with long hours and a steadfast commitment to addressing this city’s social and economic challenges. Elise has been instrumental in transforming United Way into a community impact organization that identifies social issues, convenes experts, partners with other organizations and crafts innovative solutions and policy. Under her leadership, United Way launched its strategic 10-year action plan, Creating Pathways Out of Poverty. The plan focuses on three critical issues: ending homelessness by providing housing stability, improving educational achievement, and helping families gain financial stability.

Elise’s other roles include the City of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board, a Senior Fellowship at the UCLA School of Public Affairs, a place on the advisory board for the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development Master of Public Administration program, and the boards of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and Southern California Grantmakers. She was honored with the “2009 Nonprofit CEO of the Year” award from the Los Angeles Business Journal, the “Leadership Award” at Peace Over Violence’s 37th Annual Humanitarian Awards, and the “Non-profit Leadership & Responsibility Award” at the 28th annual Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute of Public Affairs Awards Dinner.

Elise is also a wife and mother to two small boys, Hudson and Davis. Being a mother has further strengthened her resolve to build a better Los Angeles.

 

Milinda Martin, Chief Operating Officer

Milinda brings 25 years of leadership experience in the private sector, built with such organizations as Robinsons-May, Macy’s, and Time Warner Cable. Her extensive background includes public relations, cause marketing, corporate social responsibility, and employee engagement. Milinda leads strategy and operations at United Way of Greater Los Angeles, comprising finance, IT, human resources, marketing, and communications. Her commitment to help teams focus, align, and exceed expectations is her main priority, while maintaining a culture of fun. She is a strong advocate for United Way, and truly believes the organization is vital to reducing poverty in Los Angeles County.

Milinda has two adult children, and is a native Angeleno. She has a degree in Economics from Tufts University in Massachusetts, and a certificate in Economics from the London School of Economics. She is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s executive education in corporate social responsibility. She serves on the boards of the Los Angeles Urban League and the City Scholars Foundation, and is active with Southern California Grantmakers and the Los Angeles Community Leaders Group, which consists of corporate executives in the CSR and sustainability space.

 

Alice Chung, Vice President, Marketing and Communications

Drawing on nearly 15 years of marketing and communications experience, Alice is responsible for shaping and advancing United Way’s brand, increasing consumer awareness and driving donor retention. Alice oversees the development and implementation of integrated marketing and communications strategies, incorporating brand marketing, CRM, public relations, social media, content creation, digital marketing, strategic partnerships, thought leadership and events.

Prior to joining United Way, Alice was Senior Director, Brand Marketing and Public Relations, at Fabletics, Kate Hudson’s activewear brand. She was a founding member of the team that launched the brand, building a global omni-channel activewear company that changed the way women buy workout clothes. Within the first two years, Fabletics launched in more than six international markets and expanded offline into brick-and-mortar retail. Alice’s deep experience in marketing and communications also includes previous in-house and agency experience at JustFab, Paul Mitchell, BCBG Max Azria and PMK-BNC.

Alice earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Pomona College in Claremont, California, where she served as the editor-in-chief of the college’s newspaper, The Student Life

 

Deena Margolis, Vice President, Community Impact

Deena Margolis launched her career in Washington, D.C. advocating to address poverty and protect civil rights – she has been working on these issues ever since. Deena brings to United Way a strong background in strategic planning, policy advocacy, system change, and organizational development, as well as deep knowledge of early childhood development, homelessness and affordable housing and public health. Deena was drawn to United Way by its commitment to Los Angeles and its leadership for tackling the deeply-rooted issues of inequity and poverty.

For over a decade, Deena served as president of Focali Consulting, LLC, a strategic management and public policy consulting firm that works with the California nonprofit, philanthropic, and government sectors to deepen their community impact. She also has more than 20 years of experience in the public and nonprofit sectors, having held positions at the City of Los Angeles Office of the Mayor, the County of Los Angeles Chief Executive Office, and the National Council of Jewish Women. She received her Bachelors’ Degree (BA) from Miami University of Ohio and her Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from Columbia University.

Deena is a native of New Jersey, yet an Angeleno at heart. She lives in Silver Lake with her husband and two sons. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the Board of Directors of the Silver Lake Independent Jewish Community Center (SIJCC).

  

LiNing Recendez, Vice President, Finance

LiNing joined United Way of Greater Los Angeles as Controller in 2010 and hit the ground running, beginning the journey of cleaning up financials. She ensures accuracy between Gift Processing and financial reporting systems and reconciles revenue and balance sheet accounts – thus establishing best practices that set UWGLA up for success. A dedicated employee, LiNing was later promoted to Vice President, Finance. Prior to United Way, LiNing was a Senior Audit Manager at accounting firm Grant Thornton.

LiNing has worked tirelessly with all departments, outside vendors, and auditors, and has established herself as the "go to" person for all things financial in the organization. She leads the United Way Audit Committee and Investment Committee, and has graciously accepted additional tasks placed upon her exhibiting great commitment as a team player. LiNing has played an active role in helping shape our Organizational Scorecard, annual goals and budgets, and strategic initiatives. She holds degrees from UCLA and Golden Gate University. LiNing is a Certified Public Account (CPA) in California, and a member of the American Institute of CPAs as well as a member of the California Society of CPAs.

 

Lizzy Paulson, Director, Engagement & Strategic Initiatives

Lizzy Paulson is the Director, Engagement & Strategic Initiatives at United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Her background includes consumer and employee engagement, experiential marketing, and Corporate Social Responsibility. She’s also an experienced speaker with past engagements including international conferences like IMEX America, BizBash Event Innovation Forum and FestForums.Lizzy leads the strategic vision and execution of the organization’s engagement strategy, which aims to connect donors and the public with the mission of United Way. She also plays a critical role in the strategic development and implementation of key partnerships and initiatives to drive engagement, brand awareness, and revenue.

Formerly as Events Director, Corporate Brand and Reputation at Time Warner Cable, Lizzy oversaw the execution and management of local and national events for the company’s philanthropic outreach – including the signature Connect A Million Minds.  Lizzy oversaw a team that created impactful events that not only engaged customers and employees but also moved the needle on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education for our youth. 

Originally from Colorado, Lizzy loves the outdoors and connecting with friends and family. Lizzy is a graduate of the University of Southern California where she earned dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication and Visual Anthropology. She feels privileged to be a part of the United Way team working on long-term solutions to the fundamental problems facing those in need in L.A. County.

 

Joy Hoshino, Director, Human Resources

A visionary and enterprising Human Resources executive, Joy Hoshino joined United Way of Greater Los Angeles bringing over 25 years of extensive experience within a portfolio of diverse industries – Entertainment, Consumer Products, Food & Beverage, Retail, and Manufacturing. She started her human resources career at Pepsi-Cola, was recruited to Kraft Foods and subsequently has held executive roles with Coca-Cola, Macy’s, and Warner Bros. Entertainment, a division of Time Warner.

Joy’s comprehensive expertise covers a wide range of human resources functions including strategic human resource management, employee relations, talent management, compensation and benefits, change management, labor relations, process improvement, training and development, as well as legal compliance. Joy has proven to be an intuitive leader, who leverages strong communication skills to build and motivate teams and resolve business challenges. She has had a seat at executive leadership tables as a strategic and valued business partner.

Joy is a native Angeleno and received her Bachelors’ degree in Communications Theory, with a minor in Psychology, from California State University, Long Beach. An avid animal lover, she lives in Valencia with her “better half” and their posse of rescue cats and dogs.
