Improving LA’s Health through Housing

Housing is Healthcare Image

1 in 3 homeless adults have mental

and/or physical disabilities in LA County

Committed to care for these homeless individuals and all LA residents, Los Angeles Department of Health Services (DHS)  has created a new resource to innovatively impact the health of our community through housing support!

Recognizing the need to address health through housing and the limitations of current national and statewide housing resources, Home For Good Partner LA DHS has committed to helping fill the gap.  DHS has created a new pool of funding for permanent housing projects that will be locally operated and draw on health services dollars. This Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool will be a responsive source of support helping to identify and secure housing for the thousands of homeless individuals and families affected by physical and behavioral health conditions.

In support of this promising new resource, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation will invest $4 million, which will be matched with DHS funds and other local resources.  In total, $10 million is expected to be available over the next two years, beginning in February of 2014. This funding pool will help identify and secure new housing units throughout the County, provide monthly rental subsidies to property owners, and assist in the management of successful tenant-landlord relationships.

It is estimated that the Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool will help ensure housing placements for 1,200 individuals through 2016. This type of innovation to create access to new resources and support for housing and homeless services is essential to successfully reaching our goals of ending end chronic and veteran homelessness in LA.

As LA DHS recognizes, by working to end homelessness, our community can truly improve the health and well-being of LA County!
