In 2007, HomeWalk marked a turning point for United Way’s efforts to fight homelessness by serving as a vehicle for educating and engaging residents and business leaders on the solutions to homelessness. Over the past 4 years, HomeWalk has mobilized 18,000 walkers, raised $1.7 million and funded organizations that have moved 9,000 people into permanent housing.
There are currently over 51,000 homeless individuals living in Los Angeles County, making us the homeless capital of the nation. A lack of affordable housing, rising unemployment, a growing income gap between the rich and the poor have all made the threat of being homeless more present for thousands of individuals.
This year United Way will be joining forces with Kobe Bryant, HomeWalk’s Honorary Chair, to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness in Los Angeles County. Earlier this year, The Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation announced that it would be turning its attention to the issue of homelessness in Los Angeles. The foundation will help provide permanent housing and educational and career resources for Los Angeles’ homeless families and youth. To help promote the HomeWalk, Kobe has filmed the United Way of Greater Los Angeles' 2011 HomeWalk PSA where he tells Los Angeles why he has decided to join the fight against homelessness.
Help us end homelessness in Los Angeles County and join Team Kobe on November 19th in Exposition Park for this year’s HomeWalk!
