LAUSD and Teachers' Union Agree on Educational Reform

LAUSD and Teachers' Union Agree on Educational Reform

Two months ago, the Don’t Hold Us Back coalition called on the school district and the teachers union to work together to develop a new reform contract focused on school transformation and aimed at fostering the success of all LAUSD students.

On December 19,  The Los Angeles Unified School District and its teachers union  (UTLA) settled on a historic agreement that will bring a number of significant changes to the education system in Los Angeles.  The agreement will grant local schools more autonomy over hiring, curriculum and work conditions. If schools think that it is effective to diverge from policies of L.A. Unified, officials will not be able to say "no", provided that all laws and legal requirements are met.

We applaud teachers’ support for this agreement and stand ready to help teachers, administrators, parents and students implement these important reforms.

We believe this is a defining moment in our children’s education and we want to acknowledge the efforts made by both parties to put the interests of L.A.’s students first.
