Financial stability
1.6 million people in Greater Los Angeles live in poverty. 600,000 of them are children.
Our path
United Way partners with nonprofit organizations that link job training and the job market to match individuals with good jobs in stable, high-growth industries with career ladders.
United Way also leads the Los Angeles Workforce Collaborative, a partnership effort to leverage public, private and philanthropic funding to provide career opportunities for workers in several key industry sectors in Los Angeles County.
An average family needs $54,000 to be self-sufficient in L.A. County. The median income is $46,000. Only 12 percent of families can afford the median priced home.
Our Path
United Way leads efforts to help people learn about finances to help them save money to provide for their families and become self-sufficient.
Our Saving for the American Dream provides county-wide support to help people save money through financial education and matched savings accounts.
Saving for the American Dream teaches people how to create a budget and open and manage a bank account. Participants also learn how to open an account to save for the purchase of a home, to start a small business or to save for college or vocational education.
The program takes 12 to 24 months to complete, and participants are offered additional assistance for up to four years.
Funding is provided by:
Assets for Independence (OCS), Citibank, Los Angeles, East West Bank, Union Bank of California, US Bank and United Way Women Leaders.
Our Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) partnership is part of a national effort bringing over $1 billion into the homes of low-income families and the Los Angeles County economy.
Greater Los Angeles EITC Campaign Partnership
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable, federal tax credit that provides low-income working families with additional income to purchase necessities, pay down debt, or build their savings. This tax credit allows families earning up to $39,783 or less to receive a tax credit or refund of up to $4,700.
United Way works with the city, county, IRS, and other partners such as Bank of America, Southern California Edison and AARP Foundation, to increase use of the EITC in Greater Los Angeles for qualifying families.
