Shanika Honeycutt teaches 8th Grade Math and Leadership at Luther Burbank Middle School.
For the last three years she has served as the Mathematics Department Chair, guiding the department in their work to ensure students have equal access to high quality gradelevel instruction. In 20112012, the school API went up by 100 points, the largest gain in LAUSD. This data is a direct result of Shanika’s highly effective work in her classroom with her students.
This year, Shanika has taken on 8th grade Leadership supporting 8th graders in designing, planning and implementing spirit events for the entire school.
Outside of the classroom, Shanika also participates every year in @StudentsRunLA as a coach working to prepare over 20 students for the Los Angeles Marathon. She is also the Gay Straight Alliance advisor, helping to organize events such as the Day of Silence. Shanika believes that with positivity, support and guidance, all students are capable of accomplishing big things.
Principal Christine Moore at Luther Burbank Middle School had this to say:
“What we know about our work in schools, is that students need to feel connected to their school and to the adults in their schools for success to be realized. Shanika Honeycutt not only understands that but acts as that hub at Luther Burbank Middle School. She provides opportunities for students to see themselves as leaders, as athletes, as mathematicians, and as activists. She connects with students on a daily basis, supporting them in her classroom and beyond. The experiences she offers students both inside and outside the classroom empower them to know that they have a place at our school and in our community.”
