SunAmerica Volunteers Tutor Students at Northridge Middle School

In support of United Way's mission to raise the high school graduation rate in L.A. County to 75% by improving teacher effectiveness, parent engagement and middle school achievement, several employees of SunAmerica Financial Group volunteered for a two-day tutoring session this past Spring.

Students at Northridge Middle School, one of United Way's seven Leadership Matters pilot campuses, received much-needed afterschool homework help from people like SAFG Corporate Communications Associate Mary Dacuma who believes that:

"While fundraising is essential to supporting programs which help those in need, it is just as important - if not more so - to show that you truly care about people by offering your time and services," she said. "Volunteerism is the human side of philanthropy and demonstrates that your passion for a cause runs much deeper than your ability to simply write a check."

SunAmerica Regional Marketing Specialist Nam Ha agreed: "This kind of volunteer engagement opportunity is right up my alley. I need to make that personal connection," he said. "I enjoy donating my time because I can actually see the results and it allows me to directly interact with the kids I'm helping. It's something that's really mutually beneficial to both parties."
