Tocqueville Society Celebrates 25th Anniversary at Summer Solstice Event

Last night, United Way hosted the 25th anniversary celebration of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, whose members contribute at least $10,000 to fighting poverty in Los Angeles County. The ceremony at the Getty Villa featured a beautiful performance by the talented actress and Grammy-winning musician Tia Carrere. Tocqueville member Mayor Richard Riordan shared some touching remarks about his longtime friend Irwin Field, chairman of Liberty Vegetable Oil, who helped found the Tocqueville Society at United Way of Greater L.A. In accepting the Tocqueville Legacy Award, Field remembered the late United Way president Frank McNamara: "He took the trouble to reach out and create a relationship," said Field. "That's what this is about —people talking to people." Here is a photo gallery of the event. *
