UWGLA Pledges Support for the Nonprofit Revolution

Earlier this week, United Way of Greater Los Angeles became the first organization to join a unique effort to empower and garner widespread support for the nation’s nonprofit sector.

Led by Gary Wexler, a lecturer at USC’s Annenberg School of Communication and former president of Passion Marketing for Issues and Causes, the “Nonprofit Revolution Now!” campaign is seeking to collect 100,000 signatures for a petition urging President Obama to mention the nonprofit industry during his annual State of the Union address on February 12.

According to the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., nonprofits contributed $779 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in 2010 while accounting for 9% of the economy’s wages and more than 10% of jobs in 2009.

NRN believes that a successful campaign could “super-charge the philanthropic environment in this country, motivating more people than ever to support the causes we all work so hard to build.”
